Instructions for speakers and poster presentations

Instructions for speakers

Regular oral communications should be prepared for 12 min to allow for 3 min discussion.  The default computer to be used for slide projection will have Windows XP with Office 2007. It may be possible to use your own machine or non-standard software but testing should be done with the audiovisual technician well before of the schedule time for the presentation and we cannot guarantee a satisfactory result.

Speakers should contact the session moderator in advance of the session and handle the file with the presentation to the audiovisual technician before 9 AM, during the coffee or lunch breaks.

Instructions for poster communications

Posters should be prepared with 1 m (horizontal) x 1.2 m (vertical) and should be put up during the first day of the conference, Friday 24th.

Instructions to authors for 2009 ICVS proceedings

  1. Manuscripts based on poster and oral presentations at the 2009 ICVS Symposium in Braga, Portugal, will be published both online and in print as a special issue of Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics. This is the official journal of the College of Optometrists, based in the United Kingdom, and is published through Wiley/Blackwell. Christine Dickinson is the editor; ICVS Director John Barbur is an associate editor. Papers published in OPO have unique DOIs and are indexed and abstracted in Medline, PubMed Central, ISI Current Contents, and the usual places. Presently, OPO has an impact factor of 1.097 and an ISI Citation Reports ranking of 27 out of 45 journals in the Ophthalmology category. Additional information about the journal can be foundhere.
  2. Completed manuscripts must be submitted online by Thursday, September 10, 2009 via Manuscript Central, the same online site used for recent proceedings issues.
  3. Each accepted manuscript will be allocated five (5) published pages free of charge. The cost of additional published pages beyond five must be borne by the author(s) and is presently estimated to be £26 per published page. Invited speakers will be allocated additional free pages for more extensive papers that are based on their presentations at the Symposium. As a rough guide, three double-spaced manuscript pages produce about one published page of text, not counting figures and tables.
  4. Detailed Author Guidelines for preparation and submission of manuscripts can be found on the OPO website, here.
  5. A benefit of publication in OPO is that there will be no charge for color figures, if color “is necessary to convey adequate information”. Otherwise, the figure can be published in color but the cost must be borne by the author(s). Additional information about costs and conditions for free color use will be forthcoming. In general, it seems that they don’t charge for color in photographs or diagrams. They prefer graphs to be in black and white but will not charge if color is truly helpful.
  6. Evaluation of submitted manuscripts will be facilitated by ICVS members serving as special editors for the proceedings issue, as has been our past practice. Final decisions on manuscript acceptance will be made by the OPO editor.
  7. As in the past, a PDF version of each published article will be available for download by individual and institutional subscribers, and the print version of the entire proceedings issue will be mailed to each ICVS member. Information about the publisher’s compliance with the NIH open-access mandate can be found on the Author Guidelines website noted above.
